Karen Burns is Assistant Director of Intermountain Therapy Animals and an 8-year Delta Pet Partner veteran with her Great Dane, Maggie. She is a Delta Society Workshop Instructor and one of ITA’s original R.E.A.D. trainers, coordinating the efforts of all ITA’s internal R.E.A.D. teams (50+). Lance Alan Girton studied Philosophy and Education at the University of Utah, and has worked in organizational development and education in the United States and Pakistan. Lance facilitated the first R.E.A.D. school program at Bennion Elementary in Salt Lake City as a reading specialist. He is interested in non-traditional educational mediums that promote life long learning, such as an appreciation of literature. Merilee Kelley is the founder and president of Working Paws Assistance Dogs. Her volunteer hours are spent as Vice-Chairperson of Therapy ARC, a Delta Society Affiliate in Nashville, TN. Merilee is the Coordinator for Therapy ARC’s Project R.E.A.D. as well as a member of the Therapy ARC Pet Partner Training Team. In addition, she is a licensed R.E.A.D. Trainer for Intermountain Therapy Animals, a CGC Evaluator, and a member of APDT and IAADP. Merilee has a background in Special Education and Psychoeducational Evaluation. She has three Pet Partners who visit in the Nashville area. She teaches dog obedience classes, raises and trains assistance dogs, and can be contacted at ProjectREAD@comcast.net. Kathy Klotz is Executive Director of Intermountain Therapy Animals and a 10-year Pet Partner volunteer; she is also a Delta Society Team Evaluator and Workshop Instructor and has been responsible for developing the R.E.A.D. Program manual and training videos. Her Australian Shepherd, Foster, was one of the first R.E.A.D. dog pioneers. Sandi Martin, RN, BSN, NBCF, is the Manager of Community Outreach and Volunteer Services at University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics. More importantly (to us), she is on ITA’s Board of Directors; most importantly, she was the one who hatched the idea of Reading Education Assistance Dogs back in 1999! Susan McDonald, DVM was one of the first to become a Pet Partner volunteer in Salt Lake City, with her Golden Retriever Oban, back in 1993. She has been an enthusiastic supporter of Intermountain Therapy Animals ever since. She currently practices with the Central Valley Veterinary Group, and she is widely known throughout our valley for her kindness and compassion. Lisa Myron is the Children’s Library Manager for the Salt Lake City Public Library System. She received a Bachelors in Elementary Education and a Masters of Library Science both at the University of Arizona. Richard Pratt, DVM is a pet practice vet with several ITA Pet Partner® clients. He first learned of animal-assisted therapy in vet school, where one of his professors was William McCulloch, whose brother Michael was one of Delta Society’s founders. Dr. Pratt appreciates how much the study of the humananimal bond has influenced the veterinary profession and benefited society as a whole. He also admires the efforts of those who volunteer as Pet Partners. Shirley Rossa, MSW, LCSW, is a certified Thanatologist, Grief Counselor, and Adjunct Instructor at the University of Utah. She also facilitates grief support groups at St. Marks Hospital in Salt Lake City. Susan Tabke is a lifelong special education teacher and animal lover. She has been in the classroom for 26 years, working with students whose challenges range from mild learning disabilities to autism to severe physical and emotional handicaps.
